Celebratory Displays along with a Toast for Life: Israelis Delight at Agreement to Return Captives
The announcement of an agreement expected to lead to the release captives held within Gaza for more than two years has caused delight and comfort throughout Israel.
An organization which has campaigned for the return of Israeli hostages in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it termed an “historic breakthrough”.
The agreement—still requiring agreed upon the Israeli war cabinet—involves the release of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.
So far, 148 hostages have come back—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 bodies have been retrieved and eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals gathered before the deal being signed.
The gathering started applauding and moving to music under US and Israeli flags—one woman displaying a sign saying: “We adore Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” she expressed.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, cried as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it is such a comfort,” she said. “We must witness their return home to their families.”

Families Celebrate with Fireworks
The mother and sister of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker set off fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending homecoming.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy was palpable in the streets of Tel Aviv after the announcement.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Raise Glasses
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting “To life”, meaning “for life”. She has advocated for the release of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You are coming back.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, and her body recovered from an underground passage in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in advocating for a deal that brings the homecoming of everyone still detained within Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and here it is,” he said.
He said he felt “shattered” that Carmel will not be among those returning to their homes yet felt “radiant with happiness” for the families of the hostages who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel together with his sibling.
Guarded Hope from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, remarked she experienced like she was living “a dream state”.
“We are immensely thankful to President Trump and everything he has accomplished for us. We feel that this could be the beginning of the end of this nightmare, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to celebrate.
“Until the last hostage is here, we won’t open the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she said.
“So many things might occur until the last moment so this is why we’re being so, so careful. We just want to express gratitude to all who participated in the efforts and ensure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only once the last captive is safely home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south together with his sibling Iair, who was freed from captivity through a truce agreement earlier this year.
