Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their development".
Summers, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed messages demonstrated that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before his 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected the economist's decision to step down.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," the company remarked.
Congressional Action
This announcement comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on recently to endorse a measure that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its files on the case.
The legislation will then head to the office of President Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to sign the bill, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his followers.
Email Contents
A batch of Epstein-connected emails released by the House Oversight Committee last week mentioned multiple high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The messages revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to link the academic to influential international personalities.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were released with the wider community, Summers stated he assumed "full responsibility for my misguided decision to maintain communicating with the financier".
He continued that he hoped "to rebuild trust and mend connections with the persons most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor served in senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his withdrawal from public duties earlier on this week, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in the capital where he was a prominent member, announced that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
