A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's past.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the communities of AlemĂŁo and Penha, state officials reported. More than 80 people were detained.

Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the central command of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

State officials said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Residents have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
